Goals from Sowe and Takahashi Lift Men’s Soccer Over Lehigh

WASHINGTON - On a gusty day at Reeves, second half goals from junior Mustapha Sowe and junior Taku Takahashi elevated American University men's soccer past the visiting Lehigh Mountain Hawks Saturday afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts recorded his second clean sheet of the season in the win as the Eagles picked up a big three points in Patriot League action.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Both Sowe's and Takahashi's goals were their second of the season. Sowe's goal was his first career goal at Reeves.
  • Tibbetts made two saves in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a gritty game early on with neither team giving much ground. Each team drew six fouls in the first half.
  • Senior Robbie Matei and Sowe combined for American's first scoring opportunity of the game in the 14th minute but both of their shots were stopped. 
  • Sowe found the back of the net for American in the 50th minute to put the Eagles in the lead, 1-0.
  • The Mountain Hawks had a chance to even the score in the 71st minute but the shot was stopped by Tibbetts to keep American ahead. 
  • A few minutes later, in the 80th minute, it was Takahashi who sent the ball past Lehigh's goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the net to give the Eagles an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead.   
  • The Eagles' defense held strong in the final 10 minutes to secure the shutout victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American led in shots, 10-5, as well as held the shots on goal advantage, 3-2.
  • The Eagles had seven corners in the game.
  • Three cards were handed out in the game, two to Lehigh and one to American.
  • Sowe led American in shots with three and two on goal. Takahashi and sophomore Troy Elgersma each recorded two shots in the game.
