Field Hockey Defeats Bucknell in Penalty Shootout

WASHINGTON – Playing with a deficit for most of the match, the American field hockey did not go away, finding an equalizing goal with just 32 seconds left in regulation. Freshman Emilia Winkler scored her fourth goal of the season at a crucial moment for the Eagles, forcing overtime and completing the comeback in a shootout to stay perfect in Patriot League play this season.

QUOTES FROM COACH JENNINGS
"We are tremendously proud of our team's resilience today. We kept pushing and pushing and found a way to display the height of our skills when the pressure was greatest. That is the mark of a great team.

"It was a huge conference win for us and now we have a quick turnaround to get ready for another tough game tomorrow!"

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Bucknell struck first, with sophomore Kira Leclerqc converting on the penalty in the 25th minute.
  • A penalty-ridden Eagles squad maintained pressure on the Bison, playing 14 minutes throughout the match down a player.
  • Winkler picked up her fourth goal of the season at a crucial moment for the Eagles, leveling the score at 1-all with just 32 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • Two scoreless overtimes periods took the match to a shootout, where Federica Turina Dellamaggiore, Tayla-Jade Weiss, and Agustina Roffo converted their attempts to secure an Eagles' victory.
  • Today's win for the Eagles was the 299th of Head Coach Steve Jennings' career. He will look for his 300th career victory tomorrow against his alma-mater, #9 Maryland.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American controlled most of the first half, enjoying a large share of possession and outshooting the Bison seven to three.
  • In the 25th minute, midfielder Roffo picked up a yellow card, giving the Bison a player advantage for the remainder of the first half.
  • It was while the penalty was being served out, in the 28th minute that Bucknell's Leclercq blistered a shot from the top of the arch off a penalty corner to give the Bison a 1-0 halftime lead.
  • The Eagles came out in the third quarter continuing to control the game, but a yellow card for American's Sophie Willemse brought the Eagles' pressure to a halt going into the fourth quarter.
  • The fourth quarter brought about a lot of back and forth play between the two sides, each sharing opportunities to score.
  • With 32 seconds remaining in regulation, Winkler found the answer for the Eagles, converting on a penalty corner, inserted by Megan Hoffman and directed her way by Weiss, to send the match into overtime with both teams locked 1-all.
  • It would turn out that 80 minutes was not enough for either of the sides to find a game-winner, leading to a shootout.
  • The Eagles completed the comeback in the shootout, edging out the Bison 3-2 in converted shots, for the 2-1 victory.
  • By the end of the contest, the Eagles had out-shot the Bison 26-7 overall and 18-3 in shots on goal. They also out-earned Bucknell 13-2 in penalty corners.
