Field Hockey Falls Short in Close Battle with #9 Maryland

WASHINGTON – In their second battle in two days, the American University field hockey team went toe-to-toe with #9 Maryland. The two programs played the majority of the match tied at 1-all until the Terrapins found the go-ahead goal in the 43rd minute to win 2-1 over the Eagles.

QUOTES FROM COACH JENNINGS
"I think we did a great job in so many different areas. It came down to some details, and credit to Maryland; they're a great team and very well coached. I think that they were just able to put us under a little bit more pressure in some key moments and we didn't quite have the solutions, but we were really close, and it was a fantastic game of hockey.

"We just try to get better every game, but we have a tough match coming up against Lehigh on the road and Drexel is our last non-conference game. Every time we're just trying to get better and better, and I'm really pleased with how the progression of the group is going. I think if we can fix a couple areas, we're going to be tough to beat."

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Maryland struck first, when Ashlyn Carr sent in a shot from the top of the circle and Hope Rose got a quick stick on the ball to get the ball past goalkeeper Bryn Underwood.
  • Junior Federica Turina Dellamaggiore earned her first goal of the season when she slapped a backhanded shot past the Terrapin's keeper Alyssa Klebasko in the 14th minute.
  • Today's result for the Eagles means that Steve Jennings currently sits at 299 career wins. He will look for his 300th career victory on the road against Patriot League opponents Lehigh on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maryland struck first with a quick goal in open play, taking advantage in the third minute of the game to claim an early 1-0 lead.
  • Foreshadowing the remainder of the game, the rest of the first period was a back and forth battle for control. It would be Turina Dellamaggiore who found the back of the goal for the Eagles. The Argentinian chopped a backhanded attempt high into the left side of the goal in the 14th minute to put the two teams level at 1-all.
  • The first half continued as a defensive battle. The Terrapins were awarded six penalty corners in the first 30 minutes but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
  • The third period saw much of the same until Maryland forced their way back into the lead in the 43rd minute. Off a corner inserted by Margot Lawn, Maura Verleg faked a pass to Josie Hollamon and sent the ball to a waiting Sammy Popper who's slap shot made it past Underwood.
  • The Terrapins were actually down a player due to a yellow card when they scored their game-winning, second goal off a penalty corner.
  • Overall, by the end of the contest, Maryland had earned 11 penalty corners while American, averaging 13 penalty corners a game on the season, was held to just two.
  • In shots, the Terrapins took the lead in shots 18-10 overall and 12-6 in shots on frame.
