LEWISBURG, Pa. - The hitting and blocking numbers were impressive for American University volleyball as the Eagles earned a 3-1 Patriot League road victory at Bucknell. Three players reached double digits in kills, and AU posted 12 blocks compared to four for the Bison in winning by scores of 26-24, 25-11, 22-25, 25-23.
By the Numbers
- Graduate student Zeynep Uzen recorded a double-double with a match-best 16 kills to go with 12 digs, also hitting .326 and tallying four blocks.
- After a dominant second set, freshman Carly Sciborski finished with 12 kills and a match-best hitting percentage of .455 while also posting four blocks.
- Just one dig shy of a double-double, freshman Holly Hopkins added nine digs to 12 kills.
- Freshman Kaitlyn Evans recorded a career-high seven blocks, and junior Bridget Javitch led the Eagles with 17 digs.
- Returning to the court for the first time since early September, junior Lilou Stegeman made it count with four kills, zero errors and three aces.
- Graduate student Carlie Fikse recorded eight kills, and junior Esma Sipahi led all players with 48 assists.
Notable
- Uzen had a strong first set to help lead the Eagles to a comeback victory. They trailed 21-15 before going on a run and eventually tying the score at 23-23.
- Bucknell earned the first set point, but Uzen's fifth kill tied it back up, and she soon got her sixth for a 26-24 victory.
- Evans posted three blocks in that first set, and AU hit .281 compared to .125 for the Bison.
- American was dominant in the second set, cruising to a 25-11 win behind a hitting percentage of .480.
- Sciborski knocked down seven kills in the second set alone, including the final point.
- A tight third set saw seven ties and four lead changes, but the Eagles came up with just 10 kills to Bucknell's 15, and lost 25-22.
- AU looked comfortable with an 18-14 lead in the fourth set, but the Bison rallied to come within two points and kept it neck-and-neck in the final stretch.
- Hopkins got the kill that gave AU its first set point at 24-21, and after two Bucknell points, she did it again for the match-winner.
