Volleyball Loses at League-Leading Colgate; Splits Weekend Matches

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite double-doubles from Zeynep Uzen and Esma Sipahi, the American University volleyball fell 3-1 at league-leading Colgate in a conference match on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles finished the weekend with a split after coming away with the win at Bucknell a day ago.

By the Numbers
  • Uzen was the only player to reach double digits in kills for the Eagles with 12, and she added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
  • Leading AU in assists with 32, Sipahi also posted a double-double by adding 12 digs.
  • Lilou Stegeman added two blocks and two aces to four kills, and Bridget Javitch led the Eagles with 18 digs.
  • The attack errors were costly for AU, as the Eagles committed 27 compared to the Raiders' 17, and AU also got out-blocked 13-5.
Notable
  • The Eagles lost the first set 25-17, the third set 25-14 and the fourth set 25-15, hitting under .200 in all of them and tallying more errors than kills in the third.
  • Neither team hit well in the opening set, but Colgate got separation at the midway point and AU could not recover.
  • The second set was a dogfight throughout with 13 ties, the last at 24-24.
  • Freshman Holly Hopkins came up big for the set win with back-to-back kills for the 26-24 victory. It was the only set loss for Colgate in its past five matches.
Next Up
  • The Eagles will be on the road at Navy for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 13 before returning home to host Colgate at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15.
