Volleyball's Win Streak Snapped in Road Match at Loyola Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. - The win streak was snapped for American University volleyball on Tuesday night at Loyola Maryland, as the Eagles fell to the Greyhounds in straight sets at Reitz Arena. It was the first of three road matches for AU this week, with the upcoming weekend taking the Eagles to Bucknell and league-leading Colgate.

By the Numbers
  • Grad student Zeynep Uzen led American with 11 kills while hitting .296, and also posted seven digs.
  • Freshman Holly Hopkins tallied seven kills, and senior Katie Putney, who subbed in early for her first significant action of the season, finished with six kills and three blocks.
  • Leading AU in blocks was grad student Carlie Fikse who had five, and junior Bridget Javitch led the Eagles in digs with nine.
  • American lost the first two sets 25-18 and 25-18 before dropping the third 25-22.
Notable
  • Loyola never trailed in the opening set, taking a big early lead. After trailing 15-8, the Eagles came back to within two at 16-14 before the Greyhounds closed it out.
  • The Eagles matched their kills with errors in set one, while Loyola hit .300.
  • AU was able to take a 9-6 lead in the second set before a 5-0 Loyola run.
  • The score was tied up at 14-14 before the Greyhounds once again closed out strong to take it 25-18.
  • In the third set, it looked like anyone's game down the stretch, but a late push from Loyola once again put the Greyhounds on top.
  • There were 10 total ties in the third set, the last at 20-20. While AU hit .211 to Loyola's .098 with a 13-11 advantage in kills, a few too many service errors on the Eagles made up the difference.
Next Up
  • The Eagles will play three more road matches in a row, starting with a 6 p.m. contest at Bucknell on Friday, Oct. 6. AU will then head to league-leading Colgate for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 7.
