LANCASTER, Pa. - Three placewinners emerged after a long day of competition for American University wrestling at the David H. Lehman F&M Open on Friday. Highlighting the best finishes for the Eagles was sophomore
Maximilian Leete, who pinned his first three opponents of the day and finished sixth at 5-1. Leete was unable to advance further due to the NCAA daily match limit.
Notable
- American's 14Â wrestlers competed in a total of 47Â bouts and won nearly half of those.Â
- Placewinners in addition to Leete were sophomores Jack Maida (133) and Carsten Rawls (184), who both finished eighth.
- The three pins by Leete put him at nine for the season and 15 in his career, which ranks 11th all-time in program history.
- Leete took down Drexel wrestler Gabe Giampietro in 37 seconds, Davidson's Devon Diaco in 3:24, and F&M's Jack Bruce in just 30 seconds.
- After a quarterfinal loss, Leete rebounded with a 14-5 major-decision victory over Penn's Brady Pruett.
- Maida came away with three straight decisions to start his day, beating opponents from Army, Air Force and Drexel.
- Rawls earned major-decision victories over opponents from Lock Haven and Campbell to advance to the quarterfinals. He had one more win on the day along with losses to wrestlers from Penn and Drexel, and finished 3-2 overall.
- Graduate student Brad Kata also had a strong day at 184 pounds, going 3-2 including a pin of Campbell's Patrick Adams.
- At 141 pounds, redshirt-sophomore Ethan Szerencsits went 2-2 for the day including a 12-4 major decision.
- Freshman Garrett Washington started his day with his second pin of the season, taking down North Carolina's Marcus Loving in 4:59.
- With a technical fall win over North Carolina's Charley Barry, redshirt senior Patrick Ryan moves into a tie for sixth all-time at AU with nine tech falls. That ties soon-to-be Hall of Famer Kyle Borshoff, and is just one fewer than 2007 national champion Josh Glenn.
