MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Evan Schweickert netted his first goal of the season on Tuesday night, but it was #23 West Virginia University's (2-2, 0-0-0 Sun Belt) three goals in the first 13 minutes of the game that put American (2-1-1, 0-0-0 PL) in the early deficit and hand the Eagles their first loss of the season.

• Schweickert's goal was his first of the season and second of his career.
• The Eagles are now 1-7-1 all-time against the Mountaineers.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• West Virginia struck first in the third minute of the game to go up 1-0.
• The Mountaineers then added two more goals, one in the ninth minute and one in the 13^th minute to take a 3-0 lead.
• Schweickert took American's first shot of the game in the 15^th minute and put the ball in the back of the net to put the Eagles on the board, putting the score at 3-1.
• Junior Robbie Matei had back-to-back chances to pull American within one of West Virginia but his first shot was saved by the Mountaineer's goalkeeper and his second went just to the left of the goal.
• West Virginia netted its fourth goal of the night in the 76^th minute to go up by three and secure the 4-1 victory.
   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• WVU held American to just two shots in the first half and no corners.
• Sophomore Nicholas Shirley, junior Cooper Nunn and junior Lorenzo Gordon played all 90 minutes of action.
• Matei lead the Eagles in shots, recording two. Schweickert, sophomore Zemi Rodriguez, freshmen Tim Schliemann and freshman Troy Elgersma each recorded a shot as well.

 
UP NEXT

• American returns home on Saturday, Sept. 10 for a 1 p.m. matchup with Longwood University.
• The Eagles open up Patriot League play on Friday, Sept. 16 at Lehigh. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
