Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw with Longwood

WASHINGTON – Sophomore Zemi Rodriguez struck first for American (2-1-2, 0-0-0 PL) in the first minute on Saturday afternoon but a goal by Longwood (1-1-2, 0-0-0 Big South) in the second half proved to be the equalizer as the Eagles and Lancers battled to a 1-1 tie.    
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Dominic Dominguez made his first start of the season, recording three saves in the game.
  • With the tie, the Eagles have now not lost a game at Reeves since Sept. 3, 2021 when they dropped a 1-0 contest to Santa Clara.  
  • Rodriguez's goal was his second of the season and fourth of his career.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American got on the board early in the first minute of the game, off a goal by Rodriguez to put the Eagles up 1-0.
  • Longwood had its first chance of the game to find the back of the net in the fifth minute, but the shot went wide to keep the Eagles in the lead.
  • The Eagles had two more shots on goal in the first 45 minutes but both were scooped up to keep the Eagles out in front by one heading into halftime.
  • Junior Robbie Matei had a chance to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute, after breaking through the Lancer's defense and passed their goalkeeper but his shot went just wide and to the right to keep the score at 1-0.
  • Longwood netted the equalizer in the 64th minute.  
  • American had two more opportunities to secure the game-winning goal, first in the 79th minute by junior Cooper Nunn and then again in the 84th minute by graduate student Jerry Zouantcha but both shots were off target.
  • Longwood had an opportunity to net the game-winner in the 89th minute but the shot went wide and to the right as the clock hit zero.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Three yellow cards were handed out in the game, two to the Lancers and one to the Eagles.
  • The Eagles and Lancers finished the game even 9-9 on shots. American outshot Longwood 6-4 in the first half while Longwood outshot American 5-3 in the second half.
  • American held the 7-4 corner kick advantage.
  • Junior Mike Bleeker, junior Nevin Baer, junior Cooper Nunn and sophomore Dominic Dominguez played all 90 minutes.

UP NEXT
  • The Eagles turn their attention to Patriot League action, as they are set for their league opener on Friday, Sept. 16 at Lehigh. Friday's game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
  • After Friday's game, American will step out of conference play to take on the University of Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 20 in Charlottesville, Va., before returning to Reeves on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 2 p.m. game against Bucknell.
