BETHLEHEM, Pa. –American University men's soccer dropped its Patriot League season opener, 4-0, to Lehigh at Ulrich Soccer Complex on Friday night. The Eagles now move to 2-2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
 
QUICK NOTABLES

• Sophomore Dilane Zouantcha made his first career start.  
• Three Eagles, junior Lorenzo Gordon, junior Nicholas Shirley and junior Cooper Nunn, played all 90 minutes of action.
• Friday's game was the first time American had been to Lehigh since 2018.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Lehigh had the first shot of the game in the 6^th minute but the ball went wide to keep the Mountain Hawks off the board early.
• Junior Nevin Baer took American's first shot of the game in the 10^th minute but the shot  resulted in a save as the ball was grabbed by Lehigh's goalkeeper sophomore Ryan Gross to keep the game 0-0.
• Senior Mattias Cooper had another good chance for the Eagles in the 16^th minute but his shot was blocked.
• Lehigh found the back of the net in the 39^th minute go up 1-0.
• The Eagles and Mountain Hawks each took one more shot in the final minutes of the first half but both shots were scooped up by the opposing sides goalkeeper to send the game into halftime with Lehigh up 1-0.  
• The Mountains Hawks scored against in the 59^th minute to give themselves a 2-0 lead.
• The home team added two more goals, one in the 76^th minute and one in the 80^th minute, to secure the 4-0 win.

 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Five yellow cards were handed out in Friday's game. Three cards were given to Eagles and two were given to the Mountain Hawks.
• American held the 14-11 shot advantage while Lehigh held the 5-4 shots on goal advantage.
• The Eagles outshot the Mountain Hawks 9-6 in the second half.
• Senior Jack Green totaled a team-leading three shots with one on goal.

 
UP NEXT

• American returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 for non-conference match with the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start.
• The Eagles will then return to Patriot League action on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 2 p.m. game against Bucknell at Reeves.
