Men's Soccer Falls to Virginia, 2-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  American University men's soccer (2-3-2, 0-1-0 PL) dropped its midweek non-conference test to the University of Virginia (5-3-0, 1-1-0 ACC) Tuesday night in Charlottesville, Va., 2-0. The Cavaliers netted two goals in the second half to earn the victory.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Dominic Dominguez recorded a season-high five saves in his second start of the season.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts made his collegiate debut Tuesday night.
  • Tuesday's game marked the first time since 2015 that American and the University of Virginia faced each other.     
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American had its first chance of the game in the fifth minute off a shot by graduate student Jerry Zouantcha.
  • Virginia took its first shot on target in the 12th minute but the ball was scooped up by Dominguez to keep the game scoreless. He followed up the save with a second save in the 22nd minute to keep the score 0-0.
  • The Cavaliers' scored their first goal of the game in the 49th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Eagles' followed up the home team's goal with a shot by sophomore Zemi Rodriguez but UVA's goalkeeper made the save to keep the Cavaliers in the lead.
  • Junior Cooper Nunn had a chance to even the score for the Eagles in the 54th minute but his shot went just wide and to the right of the goal.
  • UVA added one more goal in the 82nd minute to secure the 2-0 midweek win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rodriguez and Nunn were the lone Eagles to play all 90 minutes of the game.
  • The Cavaliers held the 15-8 shot advantage.
  • Four yellow cards were handed out in the game with both American and Virginia each receiving two. 
UP NEXT
  • American returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 2 p.m. game against Bucknell. Saturday is the program's alumni day.
  • The Eagles will remain at home on Wednesday, September 28 for a 2 p.m. game against Loyola Maryland.
