Green's Second Half Goal Gives Men's Soccer First Patriot League Win

WASHINGTON – A goal late in the first half by junior Evan Schweickert and a late second half game-winning goal by senior Jack Green helped American University men's soccer (3-3-2, 1-1 Patriot League) defeat Bucknell University (1-7, 0-2 Patriot League), 2-1, to earn the win in the Eagles' Patriot League home opener.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Freshman Matthew Tibbetts picked up his first collegiate win in his first collegiate start on Saturday. He recorded two saves in the 90 minutes.
  • The win moves American to 3-3-2 overall, 1-1 in the Patriot League and to 2-0-2 at home.  
  • Green notched a goal and an assist in the game. He assisted on Schweickert's goal in the 43rd minute. He then notched the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute off an assist from freshman Troy Elgersma.
  • Green's goal was the fifth of his career and his assist was his fifth career assist as well.
  • Schweickert's goal was his third of his career and second of the season. Elgersma's assist was his second of the season.   
  • American has now won three-straight Patriot League home openers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American had the first shot of the game in the third minute off an attempt by graduate student Jerry Zouantcha. A minute later, it was junior Robbie Matei who took a shot but it was blocked to keep the game scoreless.
  • Bucknell's first attempt to find the back of the net was in the ninth minute, but Tibbetts made the save to keep the game scoreless.  
  • The Bison got on the board first in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • American netted the equalizer in the 43rd minute off of Schweickert's goal to send the game into halftime tied 1-1.
  • Matei came out in the second half for the Eagles and fired off a shot within the first few seconds of the half, but his shot was blocked keeping the game tied.
  • The Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the 72nd minute off a shot by Elgersma but his shot was scooped up by the Bison's goalkeeper.
  • A minute later it was Green, who found the back of the net, off an assist by Elgersma, to give American the eventual game-winner.
  • Bucknell fired one more shot in the 87th minute to try to even the score but the shot went wide and to the left, letting the Eagles run down the clock and secure the win.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American held the 13-7 shot advantage as well as a 5-3 shots on goal advantage.
  • American outshot Bucknell 7-2 in the second half.
  • The Eagles were awarded one corner during Saturday's game while Bucknell was awarded three.
  • Three yellow cards were handed out in the game, two to American and one to Bucknell.
