Volleyball Falls 3-1 on the Road at UMBC

WASHINGTON - The road woes continued for American University volleyball as the Eagles (8-7) dropped a 3-1 decision at UMBC (7-5) by scores of 22-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 14-25. The win was the first for the Retrievers over the Eagles since the 1990s, and avenged a loss at Bender Arena earlier this season on Sept. 2.

NOTABLE
  • Zeynep Uzen was AU's leader in kills yet again with 17, while also posting eight digs and two aces.
  • Another Eagle to reach double digits in kills was Adelina Berisha with 12, and she made it a career-high 12 digs.
  • Bridget Javitch led AU with 14 digs, and also served up a career-tying three aces.
  • The most efficient hitter for the Eagles was Katie Putney with nine kills and only a single error on 24 attempts (.333). Putney and Onuchi Ndee led AU with three blocks each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles hit an impressive .407 with 13 kills and only two errors in the first set, but UMBC was even stronger with 19 kills, hitting .529.
  • Berisha knocked down four kills on just five attempts to lead AU in the opening set, but the Retrievers led by a point or two most of the way.
  • An Esma Sipahi kill finally gave the Eagles a lead at 22-21, but UMBC closed out with a 4-0 run to win the set 25-21.
  • American attempted to play catch up for the entire second set and could never quite close the gap. The Retrievers committed only three attack errors while the Eagles tallied seven.
  • The Eagles came out with renewed energy in the third set, playing with the sense of urgency that was required.
  • Uzen put down four kills in the set while Putney had three, including back-to-back ones that put AU up 22-17.
  • With four attack errors, AU committed only half of UMBC's eight in the set, and the Eagles easily held on for the 25-18 win to stay alive in the match.
  • Momentum shifted right back to the Retrievers in the fourth set. AU was within striking distance, down 15-11, when UMBC rattled off six straight points to put both the set and the match out of reach on its way to a 25-14 set win.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will return home to host two Patriot League opponents this weekend. AU hosts Lehigh at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, and Bucknell at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.
