WASHINGTON - Defense made the difference on Friday night as American University volleyball remained undefeated at home this season with a 3-1 win over visiting Lehigh (10-7, 1-4) by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-22. The Eagles (9-7, 2-3) will put their 7-0 record on the line when they host Bucknell on Saturday at 4 p.m.
NOTABLE
- Zeynep Uzen vaulted up the program's career kills list, going from 13th to 11th with her season-high 25 kills. Uzen, who made it a double-double with 11 digs, needs just five more kills to get into a tie for 10th all-time in program history.
- The Eagles dug 14 more balls than Lehigh, and that effort was led by Bridget Javitch who tied her career high with 22 digs. Javitch also served up three of the Eagles' eight aces.
- Carlie Fikse hit .348 while posting 10 kills, and also led AU with four blocks.
- Inbal Peleg tallied a double-double with 13 digs to go with a season-high 46 assists.
- Prior to leaving the match with an injury early in the third set, Katie Putney put down six kills with zero errors, hitting .462.
- American had to overcome a strong blocking game by Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks posted 13 blocks to AU's seven, led by eight from Natalie Luscomb and seven from Sophia Meagher.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles hit .324 to Lehigh's .194 in the opening set, never trailing on their way to a 25-21 win.Â
- Uzen had seven kills in the first set alone in a dominating performance that gave AU a cushion throughout.
- American stormed out to a 7-0 lead in the second set behind the serving of Javitch, who had an ace in the run while Adelina Berisha posted three kills.
- Lehigh recovered well, coming back to within one at 8-7 and then tying the score a number of times in the middle of the set but never taking a lead.
- With a 4-0 run, AU went back up 22-17, and it was a lead they would need as the Mountain Hawks battled yet again.
- Lehigh fought off three set points before a Putney kill finally finished the set with a 25-22 score.
- The Mountain Hawks were the aggressor throughout the third set, leading by as many as five points on many occasions.
- American made two notable runs, getting a 15-10 deficit to 15-13, and a 19-14 deficit all the way to 19-19, but couldn't take the lead.
- Lehigh finished the third set with three blocks to AU's one, and stayed in the match with a 25-21 win.
- The scoring was back and forth early in the fourth set before AU began to pull away.Â
- With a 5-0 run, the Eagles took a 19-12 lead, but it was by no means safe. Four straight points for the Mountain Hawks made it interesting, and it was a two-point set on four occasions after that.Â
- After Lehigh came up with two kills on match points for AU, Uzen finished it off in style with a solo block for the 25-22 win.
UP NEXT
- American is back at home on Saturday, hosting Bucknell at 4 p.m. The Eagles will also play a non-conference match at home on Tuesday against UMES at 4 p.m.
