First-Set Momentum Fades as Volleyball Drops a 3-1 Decision at Navy

WASHINGTON - The momentum shifted after an opening-set win for American University volleyball, and the Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision at Navy by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 19-25 and 18-25. The Eagles now stand at 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League, while the Mids improve to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in league play.

NOTABLE
  • Zeynep Uzen led AU with 15 kills and was the only player to reach double digits. She also tied her career high with four aces.
  • The Eagles nearly matched Navy in blocks with nine as a team compared to 10 for the Mids. Carlie Fikse led the way with six blocks, while Esma Sipahi tallied four.
  • Sipahi was one dig away from a double-double, recording nine of them to go along with 22 assists.
  • Bridget Javitch led the Eagles with 11 digs, and Katie Putney had seven kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the opening set and never trailed again, taking advantage of Navy hitting errors and limiting their own on the way to a 25-21 win.
  • Uzen had six kills in just the first set, and the Eagles also posted four aces along with three blocks, the last of which was courtesy of Ndee and Berisha for the winning point.
  • The second set was tight through the halfway point, but the Mids pulled away and looked strong through to the end as they pulled out a 25-19 win.
  • Navy out-hit American .250 to .147 in the second set, and tallied three blocks to the Eagles' one.
  • After trailing 7-1 and 11-6 in the third set, American made a comeback to tie the score at 13-all, but the Mids then rattled off four straight and took the lead for good. Navy posted 19 kills to the Eagles' six on its way to a 25-19 win and 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Attack errors plagued AU in the fourth set as the Eagles committed 10 of them while posting just nine kills. Navy pulled well ahead early on in the set, leaving little room for any AU hopes of forcing a fifth set.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will face UMBC for a second time this season, heading to Baltimore for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The first meeting at Bender ended in a 3-1 win for American on Sept. 2.
