#25 Field Hockey Closes Weekend With 5-0 Win Over Queens University

WASHINGTON – Racing against incoming inclement weather, the #25 American University field hockey team (6-3, 2-0 PL) took the field against Queens University of Charlotte (0-7, 0-0 ASUN) at home on Sunday and defeated the Royals 5-0. Each of the five goals American scored were by different players, but junior Emily Horace claimed a goal and an assist.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Senior defender Charllene Boshoff scored a total of four goals in two games, and two days, with her penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter.
  • The Eagles' defense, anchored by Boshoff, allowed just two shots on frame in 60 minutes.
  • The American goal scorers were Merel Dupont, Horace, Tayla-Jade Weiss, Boshoff, and Ashlyn Campagna. For Horace, Weiss, and Campagna it was their first goal of the season. It was also Weiss' and Campagna's first collegiate goals.
  • This was goalkeeper Bryn Underwood's fourth clean sheet of the season and second in as many games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The lone goal of the first half came in the 17th minute of the matchup. Dupont claiming her second goal of the season to open scoring for the day. American led 1-0 at the half.
  • Goal number two came in the 32nd minute when in the scramble after a corner taken by Megan Hoffman, Boshoff has a shot blocked and rebounded out to Horace who made order out of chaos when she sent the ball into the back of the goal.
  • Weiss' goal was the first of three to come in the final quarter of the game. The sophomore put in the work, driving past two defenders into the circle, and spinning out of the way to send the ball into the goal and put the Eagles up 3-0 over the Royals.
  • In the 57th minute, with three minutes left to play and the clouds getting darker over the field, Boshoff stepped up to the spot to take the penalty stoke that was awarded to the Eagles. There was no doubt, as soon as she struck the ball, that it was a goal. Just like that, the Eagles led by four.
  • Under two minutes left to play, Campagna claimed her goal thanks to an assist from Horace who drove into the circle. The clock wound down on a 5-0 win for American.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • There were four green cards issued in the game. Three were given to Royals players and one to an Eagle.
  • The Eagles out-shot the Royals 27(19)-4(2) in the contest and took an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
  • Queens' keeper Hannah Neyssen had 14 saves, including a diving save in the second that sent what was sure to be a goal up and over the frame.
