#25 Field Hockey Blanks Colgate in Patriot League Home Opener

WASHINGTON – It was all Eagles from the start on Saturday as the #25 American University field hockey team (5-3, 2-0 PL) took on Colgate (2-7, 0-1 PL) at home at Jacobs Complex and took down the Raiders 8-0. Senior Charllene Boshoff had herself a day, scoring three goals including two off penalty strokes to lead American to victory.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Boshoff's three goals double her tally for the season, which was three. The South African now leads American alongside Federica Turina Dellamaggiore, sitting at six apiece for the season.
  • The Eagles' defense held strong, allowing just three shots on goal for the entire game.
  • Turina Dellamaggiore had two assists and one goal to her own name for the contest.
  • Emily Horace, Kendall Jung, and Megan Hoffman each scored a goal of their own, and Hoffman added an assist as well.
  • This is goalkeeper Bryn Underwood's third clean sheet of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It didn't take long for American to open the floodgates, scoring in the fourth minute of the game. The goal came off a corner sent in by Hoffman and was assisted by Turina Dellamaggiore. Boshoff that got on the end of it, but it was blocked and rebounded off a Colgate player. Luckily  to put the Eagles up 1-0.
  • Goal number two came only five minutes later and was almost a replica of the first. American earned a corner that was taken by Hoffman, again assisted by Turina Dellamaggiore and, again, knocked home by Boshoff, this time with no rebound.
  • Only a minute after running onto the field, Jung scored a goal that was assisted by Julia Kraft. Jung's goal was the final of the quarter with the Eagles leading 3-0.
  • The lone goal for the second period came two minutes in. Hoffman knocked it in with an assist from Turina Dellamaggiore.
  • In the third period, the Eagles were pushing hard, looking for more goals, pressing high and forcing turnovers. In the 38th minute, American earned a penalty stoke and when Boshoff stepped up to take the attempt, she slammed it into the bottom left corner of the goal.
  • Turina Dellamaggiore's goal came in the 43rd minute of the match, assisted by fellow Argentinian, freshman Agustina Roffo.
  • It was a cluster in front of the goal that led to the Eagle's seventh goal. Horace sent one in through traffic that somehow snaked its way past the keeper and two defenders to slip into the goal.
  • Another penalty stroke, again taken by veteran captain Boshoff, was the final nail that sealed the 8-0 victory for the Eagles and their second PL victory in a row.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The sole green card of the game was given to the Eagles middle of the second quarter.

  • Colgate had ten saves to American's three.
