#22 Field Hockey Opens PL Season With Overtime Victory Over Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – It was again senior Charllene Boshoff who started the scoring for the Eagles in the 36th minute, but it was sophomore Federica Turina Dellamaggiore who clinched the victory in the 64th minute of the game. The #22 American University field hockey team (4-3) began Patriot League play against Lafayette (1-6) in Pennsylvania on Saturday, and took down the Leopards 2-1 in overtime.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • The Eagles' defense only allowed seven shots, five on goal, throughout the entire contest.
  • Boshoff's goal was the senior's third of the season.
  • This was Turina Dellamaggiore's fifth goal of the season and second in as many games.
  • American is on a seven-game win streak over Lafayette, with each of those seven games having been decided by a single goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team could break the stalemate in either of the first two quarters, but the Eagles outshot the Leopards 7-0 and had the edge in penalty corners 5-0.
  • Off a penalty corner, midway through the third quarter, freshman Lotta Curanz sent the ball in and it was stopped and slammed into the back of the goal by Boshoff to put the Eagles on top 1-0.
  • The Leopards didn't trail for long, only seven minutes later sending in a goal of their own to knot the game at 1-all with one quarter left to play.
  • Through regulation the game ended tied up 1-1, sending the game to overtime.
  • Entering into the fourth minute of overtime, Turina Dellamaggiore spun around her defender, ran the ball into the circle, and sent it straight at the back of the goal to score and put the Eagles up 2-1, winning the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lafayette was served two green cards and a yellow card throughout the contest, and American received two green cards.
  • The Eagles out-shot the Leopards 15(7)-7(5) in the contest and took a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Five of those seven AU penalty corners were taken in the first quarter of the game.
UP NEXT
  • Up next for the Eagles, they're back home after being on the road for two weeks to take on Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. and Queens University on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
  • After that, AU will be home again against Boston U. on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. and Rider on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
