Zeynep Uzen Gets 1,000th Kill in Leading Volleyball to a Sweep of Morgan State

WASHINGTON - With 11 kills including the one that put her at 1,000 for her career, senior Zeynep Uzen led American University volleyball to a sweep of visiting Morgan State by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-19. Uzen had plenty of help, as Eagles posted strong three-set numbers across the board.

NOTABLE
  • The Eagles improved to 7-3 overall, while the Bears dropped to 0-10. All-time, AU is now 28-0 against Morgan State.
  • Both Carlie Fikse and Katie Putney were flawless at the net, with 10 and eight kills, respectively, and zero errors. Fikse hit an incredible .769 while Putney was nearly there at .667.
  • Putney also posted four blocks, while teammate Allie Burke led all players with six blocks.
  • American served up nine aces, four of which came from Inbal Peleg and three from Maya Mrus. Mrus also led all players with a 14 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Uzen, Putney, Fikse, and Adelina Berisha all put up three kills in the first set as American recorded 14 kills to Morgan State's seven.
  • The Eagles led by just two at 19-17, but closed out on a 6-0 run capped by back-to-back kills from Putney.
  • Early in the second set, Uzen knocked down two more kills for a 6-2 lead, and Peleg later served up two straight aces for an 11-4 advantage.
  • Uzen's 1,000th career kill gave AU a 15-9 lead, and the Eagles cruised the rest of the way.
  • The Bears' hitting improved by a long shot as they hung around in the third set, still within two points at 16-14.
  • Only in the final stretch did AU pull away, with Burke getting match point on a kill and the Eagles then winning on a Morgan State error.
