Volleyball Loses Two-Set Lead, Falls to Army in PL Season Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Patriot League opener ended in a tough loss for American University volleyball after the Eagles let a two-set lead slip away and lost in five sets at Army West Point by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 17-25 and 9-15.

NOTABLE
  • Zeynep Uzen led all players with 21 kills, but had more than twice the attempts of any other AU player and struggled with errors as well, committing 13 of them at the net. She was strong defensively, posting digs for a double-double.
  • Onuchi Ndee and Adelina Berisha tallied 12 and 11 kills, respectively, with Ndee adding a team-leading five blocks.
  • Inbal Peleg recorded 36 assists and 13 digs for a double-double, and Bridget Javitch led AU with 18 digs.
  • The Eagles had 12 service errors compared to five for Army, and the Black Knights finished with a 14-7 edge in total blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles looked very strong in the opening set, hitting .314 and getting five kills each from Uzen and Berisha with zero errors.
  • Army pulled ahead 23-21, but then closed out with four straight hitting errors to give AU the set win at 25-23.
  • The second set saw American jump ahead 8-4 and remain in the lead throughout, hitting .289 to Army's .128.
  • The Black Knights came out on a mission in the third set, taking a 5-0 lead and later leading 17-10 and 20-14.
  • From there, the Eagles got some fire back as Uzen knocked down three kills in a 6-1 run to make it a one-point set with Army ahead 21-20.
  • Down 22-20, AU rattled off four straight points for match point at 24-22, but an Army kill followed by two AU attack errors gave set point to the Black Knights, who got an ace to send the match to a fourth set.
  • With the wind out of its sails, American struggled in the fourth and trailed the entire way, eventually losing 25-17.
  • The Eagles kept it close for much of the fifth set and had it tied at 9-9, but each of the final six points went to Army.
NEXT UP
  • American will head to Colgate for a rematch of the 2021 Patriot League Championship, taking on the Raiders at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
