Volleyball Battles with Bowling Green in Final Match of Panther Invite

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The third and final match of the Panther Invitational, and second of the day for the Eagles, saw the American University volleyball team (6-3) fall in straight sets to Bowling Green (4-5) by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-17.

NOTABLE
  • First year outside hitter Adelina Berisha led American with eight kills on the match.
  • Senior outside hitter Zeynep Uzen had seven kills and nine digs. She also earned a service ace in the first set. Uzen needs just six more kills to reach 1,000 for her career.
  • Sophomore Bridget Javitch had 14 successful digs for the match while senior Rachael Bennett and Uzen had nine apiece.
  • Leading the match in assists for AU was senior Inbal Peleg with eight, followed by sophomore Esma Sipahi with six.
  • Overall, Bowling Green hit .275 and kept American to .073 on the match and earned 47 kills to AU's 24.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles kept the Falcons to a .111 hitting percentage in the first set before Bowling Green managed to pull away and take the set 25-21 to lead the match.
  • Down 24-18, AU was able to rally and put up three more points to postpone Bowling Green taking the set on a service error.
  • In the second set, the Falcons were firing on all cylinders, hitting .400 and shutting the Eagles down, holding them to just five kills.
  • The third set saw Bowling Green jump out to a 6-1 lead before American managed to get within three at 12-9. From there though, the Falcons sailed ahead again, hitting .350 for the set and holding AU to just .125 to grab the 25-17 set win, and the 3-0 match win.
NEXT UP
  • AU returns home next week for a mid-week match against Morgan State on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. After that, the Eagles are at Army West Point on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. for their first Patriot League game of the season.
