ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The American University women's basketball team picked up its third straight win on Wednesday with a 54-43 final against Navy in Annapolis.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Ten players scored for the Eagles starting with 13 points from senior Emily Fisher alongside her team-high five assists.
- Senior Jade Edwards added eight points and seven rebounds and sophomore Emily Johns added a much-needed spark off the bench in the second half, scoring seven points and adding a team-high nine boards in only 14 minutes.
- The Mids were led by yet another double-double from Jennifer Coleman who closed with 20 points and 14 boards.
- A chaotic game all around, the two teams combined for 46 turnovers with the Eagles giving up 21 miscues and Navy 25, including 12 from Coleman.
- Navy capitalized off those turnovers with 23 points while the Eagles picked up 17. The Eagles led in the paint, 32-20, and scored 17 points off the bench to Navy's four. The Mids led in second chance points, 8-3, and fast break points, 10-8.
- Navyu closed shooting 32.7 percent (16-49) to American's 42 percent (21-50) from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jennifer Coleman led the charge for the Mids in the first quarter, scoring 11 of their 16 points including a solo 9-3 run in the first six minutes of the game.
- A pair of three's from senior Maddie Doring got AU on the board and Fisher added fast break layup to send the Eagles into the break with a 16-8 deficit.
- Navy briefly opened the gap to 10 points with an early bucket from Morganne Andrews to open the second quarter, but American began to chip away at the Mids lead with a brace from sophomore Riley DeRubbo less than a minute later. The bucket opened a 9-0 run for the Eagles, including five from Fisher, to make it a one-point game at 18-17 with six minutes left in the half.
- A closing three points from junior Lauren Stack and sophomore Kayla Henning tied the game at 20-20 by the end of the half.
- The Eagles held Coleman scoreless and the Mids to only two made field goals during the 12-4 second quarter run.
- American continued the run into the second half with back-to-back baskets from Edwards and Fisher giving the Eagles their first lead of the game at 24-20.
- Coleman sank her first bucket since the first quarter to stop the run, but Fisher and senior Taylor Brown teamed up for another 4-0 run to pull AU back ahead by six.
- By the end of the quarter, the Mids closed back to within two with a closing three points from Coleman to send the teams into the fourth quarter at 36-34.
- Navy took its first and only lead of the half on the opening possession of the fourth quarter off a three from Coleman for her final field goal of the night.
- Junior Karla Vres and Johns combined for six off the bench and it was all AU down the stretch as the Eagles hit a closing 12-2 run to close with their largest margin of the night at 54-43.
