WEST POINT, N.Y. - Four of the five starters landed in double-figures but the American University women's basketball team didn't have an answer to Army West Point in extra time as the Eagles fell to the Black Knights, 67-62, on Saturday.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Junior Karla Vres closed one-point shy of her career best with 13 points, including a clutch trey in the final 10 seconds of regulation to tie the game at 57-57 and send the Eagles into their first overtime since their last time in West Point on February 8, 2020 (AU won, 67-62).
- It was Taylor Brown who paced the squad, though, scoring 14 points alongside her team-high seven rebounds.
- Senior Jade Edwards added 13 points and senior Emily Fisher scored a dozen as AU closed with four in double-figures for the first time since the win at Longwood on December 18.
- Edwards also led the team with five assists.
- The Black Knights also put four players in double-figures with 14 points from Sam McNaughton, 12 from Sabria Hunter and Kate Murray, and 11 from Alisa Fallon. Hunter closed with a game-high 11 rebounds for the double-double.
- It was an even battle from the floor as the Eagles closed hitting 42.2 percent (27-64) to Army's 44.3 percent (27-61). The Black Knights picked up an edge with their perimeter shooting, though, as they went 7-for-23 from long range while holding American to 5-for-18. Army added another six points off 12 attempts from the line while AU hit a perfect 3-for-3.
- Army, one of the top rebounding teams in the country, led on the boards, 40-31, including a 17-13 edge in offensive rebounds. They picked up 16 second chance points to American's 14.
- The Eagles led in points off turnovers, 24-13, capitalizing off Army's 18 miscues while AU gave up only 13. American also led in the paint, 44-30, but was outscored from the bench for only the fourth time during the conference season, 12-6.
- A close battle from start to finish, the game saw 10 lead changes and 15 tied scores in its 45 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army picked up the early two-point edge with a made jumper in the opening possession. AU posted the next four consecutive shots, battling for the offensive rebound each time until Brown sank a layup to pick up the first tie of the day. The Eagles continued to have a response for each Army basket over the next 3:30 until back-to-back three's from Edwards and Vres gave AU a four-point lead at 12-8 with just under 5:00 left in the stanza.
- Army managed to regain a one-point lead off a pair of back-to-back makes from McNaughton and Fallon, but Brown had the final say with her eighth point of the day to give AU a 20-19 lead by the first break.
- The two teams traded baskets once again in the opening minutes of the second quarter before hitting a three minute scoring drought. A made three from Army's Lindsey Scamman got scoring going and put Army back ahead at 24-22, but once again AU had the response as a brace from Vres tied the game back up at 24-24.
- AU and Army went back and forth over the next five minutes but a buzzer-beater from McNaughton sent the teams into the locker room with Army ahead, 32-30.
- A 7-0 run early in the third quarter pulled AU back ahead at 37-34, but back-to-back treys from Army shifted momentum the other way and the Black Knights held onto a two-point lead by the end of the stanza.
- American battled back early in the fourth, picking up a one-point lead off a free throw from Edwards after she was fouled on a made layup. She extended that lead to three a minute later with a made layup.
- Army tied the game briefly but American once again had a response, this time with a layup from sophomore Ivy Bales to make it 52-50 with just under five minutes left in regulation.
- The Eagles were put back on their heels again after a 6-0 Army run put the Black Knights ahead at 56-52 with just over a minute left.
- A steal from Edwards with 37 seconds on the clock put the ball in AU's hands and the Eagles capitalized with a made layup from Brown to make it a one possession game with 25 seconds remaining.
- American fouled on the other end, but Army's Kamryn Hall hit only one of two from the line to bring the score to 57-54 with 16 seconds on the clock. The Eagles pushed in the next possession, and a drive to the basket from Fisher pulled in the defenders just as she fed the ball to an open Vres in the corner for the three to tie the game at 57-57 and send it into overtime.
- The Eagles couldn't quite bring that momentum into overtime, though, as Army picked up a quick four points before AU managed to get on the board with a layup from Brown. The Black Knights continued to widen the gap with a closing 6-3 run.
