Women's Basketball Closes Out Redemption Week 2-0 with 70-57 Win Over Boston U.

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team got the redemption they were looking for this week, sweeping the two-game home stand with wins over Bucknell on Wednesday, 56-48, and Boston University on Saturday, 70-57, after falling to both teams on the road last month. Saturday's victory also reset the all-time wins record for head coach Megan Gebbia, who was honored before the game after breaking Jeff Thatcher's (1989-00) record with her 151st career win on Wednesday.

American now rises to 8-4 in the Patriot League and sits behind Holy Cross (10-3), Boston University (10-3), and Lehigh (9-3) heading into the final six games of the regular season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Three Eagles scored double-digits, starting with senior Jade Edwards' 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
  • Junior Karla Vres scored a season-high with 12 points alongside senior Emily Fisher who had yet another gutsy performance with four rebounds and four assists.
  • The Eagles held BU's Sydney Johnson, who averaged 16.3 ppg coming into the weekend, to only nine on the day. Instead it was Maren Durant who stepped up with a team-high 14 points followed by 10 from Liz Shean off the bench and 10 from Caitlin Weimer who added 10 boards for the double-double.
  • The Eagles closed the game shooting 50 percent (27-54) from the floor, 40 percent (4-10) from three and 80 percent (12-15) from the free throw line. The Terriers trailed closely shooting 46.8 percent (22-47) from the floor, 36.4 percent (4-11) from long range and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the line.
  • AU capitalized off Boston University's 22 miscues, scoring 27 points off turnovers while the Terriers picked up nine points off AU's 10 lost possessions.
  • American dominated on bench points, 23-14, while also leading in second chance points, 9-4, and in the paint, 36-34.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded baskets in the early minutes of the game. The lead switched hands five times in the first four minutes before back-to-back baskets from Edwards, including a fast break layup after a steal from Ivy Bales, sent American on an 11-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter.
  • The Terriers went almost six minutes without a field goal before a three from Shean ended the drought to close the gap back down to four. AU was quick with the response, though, with a pull-up from Fisher and a three from Vres in the final minute to send the teams into the break at 25-16.
  • Edwards opened the second quarter strong, adding to her seven points from the first 10 minutes with a 4-0 solo run.
  • It was another back-and-forth battle over the next four minutes until sophomore Emily Johns drew the and-one after a beautiful feed from classmate Kayla Henning. The three-point play built up the largest lead yet of the game at 36-22, and it widened again on the next possession as senior Taylor Brown sank her seventh point to make it 38-22.
  • By the end of the half, the Eagles held onto that 16-point lead as another late basket from Vres sent the teams into the locker room at 40-24.
  • This was the second-largest halftime lead of the season for the Eagles, bested only by the 19-point lead they held over Army West Point in Bender Arena on January 19.
  • American gutted it out in the second half, holding off a re-energized push from the Terriers. Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the third quarter, but AU's early scoring widened the gap briefly to as many as 23 points before a late 8-2 BU run narrowed the gap back down to 17 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Terriers continued to chip away at the Eagles' lead in the fourth quarter, but time was in American's favor and a pair of clutch plays from Fisher kept the energy alive as the Eagles held on for the win.
