VILLANOVA, Pa. – American University women's basketball (0-8) traveled up to the suburbs of Philadelphia to take on No. 25 Villanova (8-2) on Tuesday night. The Wildcats took control of the game midway through the first period and held it, shooting 53% from the field over the course of the game to top out 83-42 over the Eagles.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Emily Johns was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 12 points, going 6-10 from the field. She also had three assists.
- Lauren Stack and Kayla Henning were American's second highest point scorers for the matchup. The duo had seven points apiece.
- Stack also grabbed four rebounds while Henning had three, as well as three assists.
- Junior guard Ivy Bales led the team on the glass with six rebounds.
- The Wildcats were led in scoring by senior standout Maddy Siegrist who dropped 17 points alone in the first half and seven in the second for a total of 24. She was followed by Christina Dalce who had 13 and Lucy Olsen who had 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stack and Johns combined for the first seven Eagles' points. At the first media timeout six minutes into the first period, American trailed Villanova 7-14. Nova's standout Siegrist led the scoring at the time with six to her line on the stat sheet.
- At the end of the first, the Eagles were down 9-25. Johns and Stack were the only Eagles with points. American shot 43% in the quarter, but Villanova shot 58% from the field. The Wildcats had gone 3-8 from the arc and 4-5 from the line.
- At the end of the half, Villanova was up 46-23, having gone 8-15 from the field and 4-4 from the line. American went 7-17 but was unable to make it to the line and didn't sink any threes.
- The Wildcats went on an 9-0 run to start the second half, going up to a commanding 59-27 lead with two minutes left to play in the third quarter.
- At the end of the third, both teams were having trouble. Villanova only shot 29% from the field but had taken 14 shots. American shot 11%, going 1-9. With ten minutes left to play, the Eagles were trailing 28-59.
- In the fourth, the Wildcats improved to shoot a lights out 77% from the field, going 10-13 and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
- American improved as well, but it wasn't enough to take down the ranked Villanova and the Eagles dropped 83-42 to the second ranked opponent on their pre-season schedule.
UP NEXT
The squad will be back at home in Bender on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. versus Marist. After that they're on the road against UMBC on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3:30 p.m.
