WASHINGTON – American University women's basketball (0-9) played host to Marist (4-5) on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena. The Red Foxes dominated in the first half and through the Eagles pushed back and outscored their competitors in the second half. It wasn't enough to overtake the deficit from the twenty minutes of play and the Eagles fell 41-59.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles were led in scoring by Riley DeRubbo. The junior guard sunk 11 points, with two rebounds, and two assists. She also had a steal.
- Kayla Henning was American's second highest points getter for the second game in a row. Henning had eight points with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. She also went 2-2 from the free throw line.
- Lauren Stack lead the Eagles in rebounding with 11 boards in only 29 minutes of play.
- The Red Foxes were led by Zaria Shazer, Kendall Krick and Kiara Fisher with a combined 43 out of the 59 points. Shazer has consistently been the Red Foxes leading scorer so far this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Henning secured the first the Eagles started off on the board first yet was followed by an eight-point run by Marist.
- To start the second half the Eagles went full-court press to mitigate the damage that the Red Foxes had done in the first half.
- After finding their footing they outscored Marist 15-13 in the third quarter ending the period 25-47 with six forced turnovers.
- By the fourth quarter the Eagles found themselves in foul trouble with Stack, Molly Lavin, and Bailey Garbee all collecting four fouls with ten minutes left of regulation. The Eagles ended the game with 27 personal fouls.
- The Eagles had a field goal percentage of 40% in the fourth quarter, and Eagles found momentum from their bench with 15 bench points.
- The Eagles out rebounded the Red Foxes with 43-38 in boards.
- Offensively dominated in rebounds with 17-8 boards and found themselves matched up with 26-30 defensive boards.
- With a heavy player rotation with foul trouble the Eagles had 15 of their 41 points from the bench.
UP NEXT
The squad will be back on the road against UMBC on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3:30 p.m. After that they're away on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. against Delaware.
The Eagles' next home game will be their conference opener against Lafayette on Friday, December 30 at 7 p.m.
