FAIRFAX, Va. – Across the Potomac in EagleBank Arena, the American University women's basketball team (0-7) took on George Mason (4-5) Saturday evening. The Eagles put up a fight, but a strong second half from the Patriots led them to another home victory by a score of 71-59.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Lauren Stack led the Eagles with 16 points, going 7-10 from the field. She also led with seven rebounds and had two assists.
- Stack was followed up in scoring by Molly Lavin, who had nine. The freshman went 4-7 and had two rebounds.
- Junior guard Riley DeRubbo had eight points, six of which came from behind the arc.
- The Patriots were led in scoring by Taylor Jameson who dropped 18 points. She was followed up by Nalani Kaysia who had 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American scored the first points of the game, forcing three turnovers in the first three minutes, but it was a slow scoring frame for both teams. At the first media timeout five minutes in American trailed by one, 7-6.
- At the end of the first, the Eagles led their hosts 17-13 thanks to a 10-point effort by Stack who went 5-6 from the field. American shot 62% from the field in the quarter.
- In the second period, Mason tied it up 19-all with seven minutes left to play before the break.
- The rest of the second quarter was back and forth and tied up. The Patriots took the 25-24 lead with 2:38 remaining in the half.
- When the teams ran into the locker room, it was George Mason in the lead but only just with a scoreline of 29-27.
- The third quarter saw the Patriots shooting 60% and the Eagles 29% as the home team took advantage and pushed their lead to eight with 1:40 left in the period, leading 47-39.
- The fourth period saw American shoot 62% from the field, but it wasn't enough to recover from the third period and the Eagles fell 59-71 to the Patriots.
