WASHINGTON – Back in Bender, the American women's basketball team took on Howard University. The Eagles (0-6) and the Bison (2-5) battled it out, but ultimately the Eagles fell to the crosstown visitors, 83-70. American was once again led in scoring by
Emily Johns, who had a 23-point, career high performance.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Johns went 7-14 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line. She also had four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
- Kayla Henning was the Eagles' next highest points getter. The guard had 10 points and went 4-4 from the line. She also had two assists.
- Ivy Bales had nine points and led the Eagles on the glass with 16 rebounds. Bales also grabbed four assists and two steals.
- Sophomore guard Bailey Garbee saw significant minutes in the game. She finished with 9 points. Garbee shot 5-6 from the line and grabbed three assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
- The Bison were led in scoring by Destiny Howell who dropped 34 points. She was followed up by Aziah Hudson with 13 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a low scoring start for both teams in the first frame of the game. Johns led the charge, scoring the first six points for the Eagles to keep them within two of the visiting Bison who were up 8-6 at the five-minute mark.
- At the end of the first, Howard led American 17-14, shooting 38% to the Eagles' 40%. The advantage came from Howard having gone 4-6 from the free throw line.
- In the second the Bison held the Eagles to just 20% from the field and made sure only three Eagles had scored in the first half: Bales, Johns, and Garbee.
- Howard led 46-31 at halftime, outshooting American to gain the advantage. The Eagles led in rebounding 18-17 at the break. Nine of the Bison points came from beyond the arc while only one three pointer was sunk for the Eagles.
- To start the second half, the American outscored Howard 14-10 to trail 45-56. The team went 85% from the free throw line while not letting the Bison get on the line.
- Finishing the third frame down 55-65, the Eagles shot 56% from the field to the Bison shooting 57%. Of American's 24 points in the quarter 14 came from the free throw line.
- A three by Ivy Bales had the Eagles trailing by just six at 64-70 with six minutes left to play in the game, but from that point forward, the Bison took full control, shooting four more free throws and two more three-point baskets, going 43% from behind the arc in the fourth.
- Despite improving on their rebounding from previous games and trailing in the stat just 35-36 to the Bison, even matching offensive rebounds with 11 apiece, the Eagles fell to Howard 70-83.

The Eagles are on the road again for two games. First, they face off against George Mason on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 5:50 p.m. and then they head up North to take on Villanova on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
