BIMINI, THE BAHAMAS – The American women's basketball team took on the Arizona State on Friday evening in their final game of the Goombay Splash Tournament. The Eagles (0-5) grabbed the early lead, but it wasn't enough to take down the undefeated Sun Devils (5-0) who took the game, 70-61. Forwards
Lauren Stack and
Emily Johns led the charge for the Eagles with 18 points apiece for the matchup.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Stack shot 8-10 from the field, grabbing a season, and career high of 18 points. She also had four steals, three rebounds, and went 2-2 from the line.
- Johns' 18 points were a season high for her as well, going 8-14 from the field. The junior also grabbed five rebounds and had a block as well.
- Junior guard Riley DeRubbo also turned out a season high performance in the game. The 14-point performance also included going 2-2 from the line. She also grabbed four rebounds and had four assists.
- The Sun Devils were led in scoring by Tyi Skinner with 24 points. She was followed up by Trayanna Crisp and Jaddan Simmons, each with 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American jumped out to an early lead in the first five minutes of the game, leading 14-6 with four starters scoring and two steals, one from Bales and one from Stack.
- A final effort three-point basket from the Sun Devils in the quarter had the teams on more level ground. The Eagles still led, 20-17.
- Arizona State finished the first frame and started the second on a seven-point run to take their first lead of the game at 21-20, but that was stopped by Stack with a long-range jumper that put the Eagles back in the lead.
- Once the lead was closed in on, the game was tight for the rest of the half and the Sun Devils had the lead 34-33 at the break.
- In the first half, Stack had 14 points, shooting 6-7 from the field and 2-2 from the line, along with two rebounds and three steals. As a team, the Eagles shot 48% and held the Sun Devils to 34% from the field.
- In the third period, Arizona State started off on a bit of a roll, taking an eight-point lead at one point in the frame, the score line 47-39. American pulled back though, finishing the frame with an eight-point run to tie it up 48-all with just one period left to play.
- The Eagles held the Sun Devils to 26% from the field in the third while shooting 46% themselves.
- The fourth period was a tense back-and-forth battle, but ASU shot 60% from the field and held American to their lowest period at 40% in order to gain and keep their advantage, winning 70-61.
