Volleyball Completes a 3-0 Week with a Four-Set Win at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. - After a shaky start, American University volleyball recovered well and boasted a lot of strong performances in a 3-1 Patriot League win at Lafayette (4-10, 1-6) on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles (12-8, 4-4) have now won three straight.

NOTABLE
  • It was a strong blocking game for American with 11 team blocks to Lafayette's four. Leading the way were Onuchi Ndee and Esma Sipahi with six blocks each, while Carlie Fikse posted five.
  • Fikse totaled 11 kills and hit .526 with just a single hitting error in 19 attempts.
  • Fresh off her first double-double of the season one day prior, Maya Mrus notched another one with 11 digs to go with 12 kills.
  • Adelina Berisha led AU with 13 kills, and Ndee finished with five while committing no errors.
  • Sipahi added 11 digs and 34 assists to her six blocks for a double-double, with Inbal Peleg also recording a double-double (12 digs and 10 assists). Peleg served up five aces to tie her career high.
  • Rachael Bennett led all players in the match with 19 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles led from the first point and most of the way through the first set, at times by five points. But with AU up 22-18, the Leopards rallied for six straight points to take a 24-22 lead.
  • Ndee stopped the run with a kill to fight off one set point, but an error on the next play gave the set to Lafayette, 25-23.
  • The Leopards took a 10-6 lead in the second set but AU fought back, getting three kills from Berisha and two aces in a stretch that saw the Eagles take a 14-13 lead.
  • The score stayed tight and was tied at 20-20 before AU scored five of the final six points for the 25-21 win.
  • After a 17-13 lead evaporated for the Eagles in the third set, it was a nail-biter to the end. The teams were tied at 22 and 23 before Berisha and Fikse put down back-to-back kills for the 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • American stormed out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth and never looked back, going on to win 25-14. The Eagles hit .429 compared to .088 for Lafayette.
  • Berisha was involved in all three of the final three points, coming up with two kills and a block assist along with Fikse.
UP NEXT
  • AU will be back home in Bender Arena to host Howard at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
