Volleyball Drops Home Contest to City Rival Howard

WASHINGTON - The final piece needed to sweep its city rivals in 2022 was not one American University volleyball was able to get, as the Howard Bison (10-7) came into Bender Arena on a mission and handed the Eagles (12-9) a three-set loss. The 2021 MEAC champions looked strong all night, winning 25-19, 25-22 and 25-14.

NOTABLE
  • Howard beat American for just the fourth time in 39 tries and the first time since a 3-2 victory in 2016.
  • Onuchi Ndee was the top player for the Eagles with seven kills and zero errors on 10 attempts, hitting .700 and getting two blocks.
  • Also hitting well was Carlie Fikse with six kills and a percentage of .357.
  • Maya Mrus led the Eagles with eight kills, and Inbal Peleg posted a team-best eight digs.
  • The Bison had 48 kills to American's 31, six aces to AU's zero, and nine team blocks compared to three for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got off to a tough start in the first set as Howard took a 6-2 lead. AU recovered and ended up leading 13-11 near the midway point, but Howard took the lead back for good at 17-16.
  • Too many errors down the stretch allowed the Bison to surge ahead, and they closed on a 5-1 run to take the first set 25-19.
  • Overall, Howard hit .281 in the opening set compared to .094 for the Eagles.
  • American started much stronger in the second set with a few kills for Mrus and led 9-4, but the Bison used a 6-1 run to tie up at a 10-10.
  • After the Eagles looked to be in a good position with a 21-17 lead, Howard rallied again.
  • The Bison got some momentum and ran with it, finishing the set on an 8-1 run to win 25-22.
  • Howard picked up right where it left off in the third set, leading from the first point and running away with it for a 25-14 win. The Bison hit an incredible .696 with 18 kills and only two errors, while AU posted eight kills and one error.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will have a bye weekend and eight full days off before hosting Colgate on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. and Army West Point on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. for the annual "Pink Out" match in support of breast cancer research.
