WASHINGTON - League-leading Colgate (17-4, 9-1) stayed on top and beat American University volleyball in straight sets for the second time this season, winning 25-16, 25-22 and 25-19 in Bender Arena on Friday night. The Eagles (12-10, 4-5) had flashes of strong play in the second and third sets, but were unable to sustain it for long enough.
NOTABLE
- For the first time since suffering an injury in the opening set against Bucknell on Oct. 1, Zeynep Uzen returned to the court for AU. She had an impressive line in her first match back, leading all players with 14 kills and tying for the match lead with 10 digs.
- With her efforts, Uzen moved into the top 10 all-time in kills at American, now ranking 10th with 1,119 kills.
- Adelina Berisha posted 11 kills, and Carlie Fikse added four while hitting .444 with zero errors. Fikse also led American with three blocks.
- Just one dig shy of a double-double, Inbal Peleg recorded a match-high 31 assists to go with nine digs.
- The loss was the Eagles' sixth in a row against Colgate, despite a 43-10 advantage in the all-time series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colgate raced out to a 12-2 lead in the first set and never looked back, hitting .393 to the Eagles' .091 and winning 25-16.
- After trailing 10-4 in the second set, American rallied to come within a point at 17-16 and 20-19, but couldn't tie it up.Â
- Uzen fought off one set point with a kill to pull AU close at the end, 24-22, but Gillian Hauschild ended it with a kill for the Raiders.
- The third set saw the Eagles lead for the first time in the match at 4-3, and there were a total of 13 ties and eight lead changes.
- It was the strongest set for AU with a hitting percentage of .219, but the Eagles were still outdone by Colgate as the Raiders hit .300.
- The final tie came at 16-16 before Colgate picked up momentum for the final stretch, closing out on a 9-3 run.
