Volleyball Drops a Four-Set Match to Army West Point in Bender Arena

WASHINGTON - The weekend ended with another tough loss for American University volleyball as the Eagles (12-11, 4-6) gave up a home match in four sets to Army West Point (12-8, 8-2) by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 18-25 and 17-25.

NOTABLE
  • For a second match in a row since returning from an injury, Zeynep Uzen led the Eagles with 13 kills, and made it her second-straight double-double with 13 digs.
  • Rachael Bennett and Inbal Peleg posted 19 digs each to lead AU, and Esma Sipahi had 16 digs to go with 36 assists for a double-double.
  • Also reaching double digits in kills were Adelina Berisha and Carlie Fikse with 10 each, and Fikse led all players in the match with five blocks.
  • The Eagles held their own in blocks and aces, but the Black Knights came up with 65 kills to AU's 46 despite swinging only six more times than the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American looked strong early with a 6-1 lead to start the opening set, but that would prove to be deceiving. Ultimately, the set was extremely close with 13 ties and eight lead changes.
  • Uzen was on fire, recording nine kills in the first set alone and leading the Eagles to a 25-23 win. Her ninth kill set up set point before Berisha and Onuchi Ndee combined for the set-winning block.
  • The Black Knights took the upper hand in the second set and held onto it. They never trailed, and the set was close with three ties only in the early going.
  • AU called timeout down 18-10 and used a 5-1 run to make it interesting at 19-15, but Army surged ahead again to make it 24-17.
  • Uzen had two kills and a block with Allie Burke as the Eagles fought off three set points, but Army finally took it, 25-20.
  • Army kept the momentum through the third set and built a 17-12 lead. The Eagles cut the deficit by two but could get no closer.
  • The third set stats had the Black Knights with 18 kills to American's 10, and Army won it 25-18.
  • In the final set it was all Army yet again as AU posted just half the number of kills, getting nine to the Black Knights' 18.
UP NEXT
  • AU will play a midweek Patriot League match at nearby Loyola Maryland on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The Eagles return home on Friday, Oct. 28 to host Navy at 7 p.m.
