An Explosive Second Half Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Colgate, 3-0

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The scoreless stalemate lasted until the 52nd minute, but once the floodgates were open the American University men's soccer team defeated Colgate 3-0. It was sophomore Dilane Zouantcha who started the scoring, recording his first goal of the season. Ethan Boyle followed by recording a brace for himself, scoring twice in the span of six minutes. Boyle's goals were the first and second of the season for him.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore keeper Dominic Dominguez recorded his second win and second clean sheet of the season. He recorded four saves in the win.
  • American (5-3-3, 3-1-1) handed Colgate (5-3-3, 2-1-2) its first loss since September 20 when the Raiders fell to the Syracuse Orange. The loss is also the first Patriot League loss of the season for the Raiders.
  • This is the second win over Colgate in a row for the Eagles.
  • The win marks the fourth shutout of the season for American and the second in a row. It is American's second Patriot League shutout of the season, also in a row.
  • Zouantcha and Boyle are now the seventh and eighth Eagles' players, respectively, to hit the back of the net this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles took their first shot of the game in the fifth minute mark, Robbie Matei forcing the Colgate keeper to make the save to keep American from taking an early advantage.
  • It was Matei again in the 10th minute with another attempt at the goal, but this time his shot was sent high and to the left over the goal.
  • The Raiders lone shot on goal for the first half came in the 11th minute, but Dominic Dominguez held his ground and picked it up to keep the score even at zero.
  • To start the second half, in the 48th minute, Dominguez was given a yellow card for a foul just outside of the box. Colgate tried to make an opportunity of it, but the shot sailed high over the goal.
  • Four minutes later, in the 52nd minute, AU used the momentum of a throw-in and Zouantcha capitalized, sending a rocket into the back of the net to put the Eagles up 1-0.
  • Boyle, in the 62nd minute, launched in a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that slammed into the back of the Colgate goal. The give-and-go assist between Boyle and Zemi Rodriguez earned Rodriguez an assist.
  • Boyle again, six minutes later in the 68th minute, claimed another goal for himself. The play built from the back, started by Robbie Matei stealing the ball back in the defensive third and making a run. Just three passes, one to Troy Elgersma, one back to Matei, and a final one over to Boyle, were all that were necessary to claim a 3-0 lead.
  • The 3-0 score line would hold until the end of the game and give the Eagles their third Patriot League win of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American had a 10-8 shot advantage in the game. The Eagles out-shot the Raiders 5-4 in the first half and again outshot the Raiders 5-4 in the second half as well. The Eagles also held the advantage in shots on goal for the game 5-4.
  • Colgate held the 2-0 corner kick advantage. Colgate held American to no corner kicks in the first half but claiming one on each side of the break for themselves.
  • Two yellow cards were handed out in the game, one to American and one to Colgate.
  • Rodriguez, Mattias Cooper, and Mike Bleeker recorded one shot apiece in the game. Zouantcha had two shots and Matei had three. Boyle's two shots were both goals.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles are returning home for two games, a nonconference test on Tuesday, Oct. 11 against James Madison University and a Patriot League game on Saturday, Oct. 15 against Holy Cross.
  • After that they're on the road again against Delaware on Tuesday, October 18.
