Volleyball Falls to Navy in Patriot League Action

WASHINGTON - The string of tough matches continued for American University volleyball on Friday night, as the Eagles dropped a three-set decision to Navy in Bender Arena by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-23. AU made a strong run late in the third set to tie it up, but Navy finished out the final two points for the win.

NOTABLE
  • Zeynep Uzen led American with 14 kills, also recording five digs and two aces.
  • Katie Putney and Allie Burke posted three blocks each, and Putney also came up with five kills and just a single error in hitting .333.
  • Rachael Bennett and Bridget Javitch had nine digs each, and Esma Sipahi posted a team-high 22 assists.
  • The Mids were strong on both the serve and the block, and hit .217 in the match as compared to .125 for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Navy hit .394 to AU's .152 and controlled most of the first set after taking a 17-9 lead.
  • The Mids had four blocks and 15 kills, while the Eagles had no blocks and eight kills, getting four of those from Uzen.
  • After trailing 13-5 in the second, American hit its stride to close the cap to 13-8, and later tied things up at 17-17.
  • From there, Navy pulled back ahead and ultimately won the set, 25-21.
  • American could have packed it in after trailing 12-1 in the third set, but the Eagles found their fight in the end.
  • After trailing 20-12, AU rattled off five straight points including a block and kill for Carlie Fikse.
  • Down 23-18, Uzen knocked down three kills in another 5-0 run that tied up the set at 23-23.
  • Despite the momentum by AU, Navy finished it off with a kill and a block to end AU's hopes of getting back in the match.
UP NEXT
  • AU will be on the road for its next two matches at Bucknell and Lehigh on Nov. 4 and 5.
