Field Hockey Battles Back to Win 3-1 Over Lehigh

WASHINGTON – On Friday afternoon the American University field hockey team (7-6, 3-2) came back from a 0-1 deficit at the end of the first quarter to top Lehigh University (8-6, 2-2) 3-1. Senior Megan Hoffman opened the scoring for the Eagles with her second goal of the season and sophomore Federica Turina Dellamaggiore's two goals put the Eagles in winning position.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Turina Dellamaggiore's two goals were goals nine and 10 of the season for the Argentinian. She's the sole leader of the team.
  • Junior goalkeeper Bryn Underwood recorded three saves for the match while freshman Frederiek Thierry had a huge defensive save at the end of the first half to keep the Eagles ahead.
  • Aside from the goal scorers, Merel Dupont and Julia Kraft each recorded one shot on goal while Thierry recorded two. Thierry and Dupont also each recorded an assist.
  • Dupont now leads the team with four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was cracked open by Lehigh in the first quarter, scoring in the 14th minute on the sole shot taken by either team in the first to take the 1-0 lead.
  • In the 20th minute though, Hoffman got hold of the ball in the Eagles defensive third before going on a solo drive down the field. She managed to get around the keeper and through defenders, the shot went in to tie the game up 1-1.
  • It was Turina Dellamaggiore who put the Eagles ahead 2-1 at the end of the second, in the 27th minute, when she blitzed one in from the edge of the circle off a pass from Dupont.
  • The Eagles' third goal came as a result of a scuffle for possession just in front of the goal. In the 47th minute Hoffman sent a ball across the front of the goal where three Eagles outnumbered the two Mountain Hawks that were back. Ultimately it was a pass from Thierry that landed for Turina Dellamaggiore who scored to put AU up 3-1.
  • The Eagles kept Lehigh from firing a single shot in the fourth quarter of the game to hold onto their two-goal lead and grab the 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American had a narrow 8-7 shot advantage in the game. The Mountain Hawks out-shot the Eagles 6-5 in the first half, but the Eagles had a 3-1 advantage in the second half. The Eagles also had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal in the game.
  • Lehigh held the penalty corner advantage, 4-0 in the game, keeping American from taking advantage in the entire 60 minutes of play.
