LEWISBURG, Pa. – On Saturday the American University field hockey team (8-6, 4-2 PL) took on Bucknell (4-11, 3-2 PL), defeating the hosting Bison 3-2 in a game that had Patriot League Championship implications for both teams. The goals rained in from
Megan Hoffman,
Federica Turina Dellamaggiore, and
Charllene Boshoff, all from penalty corners, to give the Eagles the win and a spot in the Championships.
QUICK NOTABLES
- Turina Dellamaggiore's goal put her at 11 on the season. She's tied for the league-lead in the stat with Bucknell's Lily Neilson.
- Boshoff's eight goals put her in second place on the team and fifth in the conference.
- Merel Dupont and Lotta Curanz who both assisted on goals two and three for American, now lead the team with six and five assists respectively.
- Junior goalkeeper Bryn Underwood recorded six saves on the day, including one in the final 90 seconds to ensure the win for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles earned a penalty corner in the first thirty seconds of the game, coming out with a strong offense.
- The Bison registered two shots on goal in the first minute, both saved by Underwood. In the fourth minute, Bucknell cracked open the scoring, going up 1-0.
- The Bison lead only lasted until the 23rd minute when after a corner, Hoffman got the second shot off, with an assist from Tayla-Jade Weiss, to tie the game at 1-all heading into the half. Hoffman's goal is her third of the season, all three coming in conference play.
- Four minutes after the break, American took its first lead of the game, going up 2-1 over Bucknell after Turina Dellamaggiore knocked in a shot after a corner.
- In response, two minutes later, the Bison scored off their own corner to knot it all up again at 2-2.
- In the fourth, Bosohff, off a corner, blitzed one straight through traffic and into the back of the Bucknell goal. The Eagles took the lead with 12 minutes left to play in the game.
- In the 58th minute, Underwood had a save that would keep the Bison from tying it up again and the score line would hold at 3-2 to give the Eagles the win in their final Patriot League regular season game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bucknell had a narrow 14-12 shot advantage in the game. The Bison out shot the Eagles 7-5 in the first half, but both teams were even 7-7 in the second. The Bison also had an on-goal shot advantage of 8-5.
- Bucknell held the penalty corner advantage, 7-6, in the game, but all three of American's goals were the result of a corner.
- Two green cards were issued during the game, one to Bucknell and one to American.
