BOSTON - The American University women's basketball team (8-4, 1-1 PL) struggled to find a response for Boston University's (7-7, 3-0 PL) size on the inside and fell to the Terriers, 69-46, on Saturday.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Senior Taylor Brown paced the Eagles with 15 points and six rebounds, followed by senior Jade Edwards who fell just four points short of her 1,000th with 10.
- Three players closed in double-figures for the Terriers with Caitlin Weimar leading with 16 followed by Sydney Johnson (13) and Alex Giannaros (11).
- AU gave up a season-low 10 turnovers but was held to its lowest shooting percentage of the season, hitting 19 of 70 (.271) while BU went 26-for-56 (.464).
- The Eagles trailed in the paint, 34-22, in points off turnovers, 15-7, and bench points, 22-15, but held a 14-11 edge in second chance points after pulling down a season-high 16 offensive rebounds. Boston still dominated on the boards, though, 49-33.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams had a slow start offensively with the Eagles held to only two points behind the opening jumper from senior Emily Fisher until a trey from Brown at the 6:11 mark cut BU's early lead down to one, 6-5.
- A turnaround jumper from sophomore Emily Johns put the Eagles ahead, but Boston had the response with a 12-2 closing run to take an 18-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
- A fastbreak layup from Fisher after a steal from sophomore Ivy Bales brought the Eagles back within 11 after another BU run pulled them to a 25-12 lead.
- The Terriers looked like they were going to take a 16-point lead into the locker room until sophomore Kayla Henning sunk the buzzer-beater to bring the score to 32-18 at the break.
- The Eagles came out swinging in the third quarter, improving from 26.7 percent (8-30)Â shooting to 31.6 percent (6-19) and cutting the BU lead back down to nine after a jumper from Brown sent them on a 9-2 run midway through the stanza. They couldn't convert on the defensive end, though, as Boston matched them basket-for-basket down the stretch to rebuild a 48-35 lead to start the final quarter.
- Late fouls put the Terriers on the line 10 times for another seven points as they continued to stretch the lead.
