WASHINGTON - American University women's basketball senior
Jade Edwards reached her second milestone of the season on Wednesday with her 1,000th career point during the Eagles' 52-39 win over Holy Cross in Bender Arena. AU now sits 9-4 overall this season and 2-1 in the Patriot League while the Crusaders fall to 8-6, 2-1 in the PL.
NOTEWORTHY
- Edwards is the 20th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and the 11th to also earn 500 career rebounds.
- She is the first player since Cecily Carl ('19) to reach both milestones.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Nine players scored to lead the Eagles, starting with a dozen points from senior Taylor Brown. This is her 10th consecutive game in double-figures.
- Senior Emily Fisher added another 10 points alongside her team-high seven assists and season-high seven rebounds.
- Edwards was held to only five points but found other ways to contribute, pitching in five assists and bringing down a team-high eight rebounds.
- Freshman Bailey Garbee closed with a career-high, scoring seven points in her 13 minutes.
- The Crusaders were led by another double-double effort from Avery LaBarbera, who closed with a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds. She was the only Holy Cross player to close in double-figures.
- American led with 38.6 percent (22-57) from the floor while holding Holy Cross, who entered the game averaging 61.2 ppg, to only 28.6 percent (16-56) from the field and 5.3 percent (1-19) from three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Taylor Brown and Lauren Stack got things rolling for the Eagles early on, pulling AU ahead, 6-2, after Holy Cross took the first lead of the night.
- American led by as many as seven in the first quarter behind five points from Emily Fisher and four each for Brown and Stack, but a late three from Avery LaBarbara pulled the visitors back within four by the break, 15-11.
- Holy Cross battled back in the early part of the second quarter, tying the game twice before a three from Jade Edwards sent AU on a 9-2 run to rebuild a seven-point cushion.
- A jumper from Holy Cross' Cara McCormack cut back into the Eagles' lead, though, as the Crusaders nudged to within five with just under a minute left in the half. They nearly cut that lead down to two in the final seconds of the half, but Riley DeRubbo came away with the clutch block on a three attempt by Kelly Petro to send the teams into the locker room still at 28-23.
- Back-to-back baskets from Fisher and Garbee gave AU its largest lead yet of the night at 33-25 midway through the third quarter. American laid on the pressure defensively over the next five minutes, holding Holy Cross to only one made basket to close the stanza with a 37-27 lead.
- Holy Cross' shooting woes continued in the fourth quarter, as the Crusaders were held to only 33.3 percent (3-9) in the last 10 minutes.
- DeRubbo got the offense going with her second basket of the night on AU's first possession of the stanza. The Eagles hit an eight-point run to take a 45-29 lead before Holy Cross found a response with a set of free throws from LaBarbara. Included in that run was a mid-range jumper from Edwards to land at 1,001 points in her career.
- The Crusaders inched closer in the final three minutes, closing the gap to 10 points briefly before a pair of late baskets, including a three from Garbee - her first as an Eagle - closed the game.
