Women's Basketball Falls Short of the Comeback at Bucknell, 62-52

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The American University women's basketball team (9-5, 2-2 PL) cut to within five midway through the fourth quarter, but couldn't quite come back from a 17-point halftime deficit and fell to Bucknell (12-4, 3-2 PL), 62-52 on Sunday.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Senior Jade Edwards fell just one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season with a team-high 22 points and nine rebounds.
  • Senior Taylor Brown was also looking at a double-double with 14 points and eight boards.
  • Junior Lauren Stack added five steals while senior Emily Fisher pitched in four assists.
  • The Bison were led by a 14-point effort from Cecelia Collins. Carly Krsul added 11 off the bench and Taylor O'Brien threw in 10 along with a team-high eight rebounds.
  • The Eagles were held to 34 percent (17-50) from the floor while Bucknell shot 46.7 percent (21-45) including 40 percent (6-15) from three and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the line.
  • American led in points off turnovers, picking up 22 off Bucknell's 20 miscues while the Bison added 21 from the Eagles' 22.
  • AU also held the advantage in second chance points, 12-6, while Bucknell led in the paint, 28-26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bucknell took advantage of AU's shooting woes in the first quarter, hitting 50 percent (7-14) while the Eagles were held to only 3-for-12 (.250).
  • American continued to struggle in the second quarter as Bucknell hit a series of early three's to take a 27-13 lead, forcing the AU timeout with 5:47 left in the half.
  • The Bison picked up another five points out of the huddle to take the largest lead of the game at 32-13. Both teams struggled to land a shot in the final four minutes with Brown adding the last basket of the half to go into the locker room at 32-15.
  • American found its rhythm in the third quarter, improving from a .222 field goal percentage in the first half to 37.5 percent and, most importantly, 80 percent (8-10) from the line as the Eagles took advantage of a quick five fouls from Bucknell to open the half.
  • Bucknell matched basket-for-basket, though, as the Eagles couldn't come up with the defensive stops they needed to close the gap.
  • By the end of the third, AU still had an 18-point deficit to overcome.
  • Back-to-back jumpers from sophomore Kayla Henning opened the fourth quarter and sent the Eagles on a 17-4 run to cut the Bison's lead down to five with just under four minutes left in the game.
  • Back-to-back turnovers and a pair of shooting fouls halted the AU run, though, as Bucknell bounced back to rebuild a 10-point lead at 46-56 with 2:21 left on the clock.
  • The Eagles couldn't find that closing run they needed as the Bucknell defense limited clean looks at the basket.
