Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early Lead Slips Away for Men’s Soccer as the Eagles Fall 3-1 at No. 17 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A great heads-up play by Evan Schweickert led to a Mustapha Sowe goal in the 13th minute, but back-to-back Penn State goals in the 20th and 21st minutes killed any momentum as American University men's soccer eventually fell 3-1 on Monday night at Jeffrey Field.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sowe started for the first time on Monday night and continued an impressive goal-scoring run by AU's freshman class, as all three AU goals this season have been scored by freshmen.
  • Schweickert picked up his first career assist on the play.
  • Lorenzo Gordon matched his season-high with five saves on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Schweickert sent a shot wide at the 11:56 mark, Penn State tried to clear the ball out to the midfield. But Schweickert intercepted a mid-range pass and the Eagles had a numbers advantage on the attack.
  • Schweickert sent a short feed to Sowe, who deked one defender before blasting a shot to the bottom right part of the net for his first career goal.
  • The Eagles had a couple more good chances but two shots by Zemi Rodriguez and Mattias Cooper were saved by the Nittany Lions.
  • In the 20th minute, Penn State found the equalizer after Seth Kuhn fired a rocket pass that redirected off Andrew Privett past Gordon.
  • Less than a minute later, an aggressive Penn State attack jumped ahead with a nifty heel-kick goal after AU couldn't clear the initial ball out of the box.
  • The Eagles were able to draw back-to-back corner kicks in the 33rd minute but couldn't generate a quality chance and went to halftime down 2-1.
  • Penn State gained an insurance goal in the 55th minute after Danny Bloyou scored on a diving header.
  • American had four shots in the final 10 minutes, including a great chance from Mattias Cooper, but couldn't find the back of the net.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • It was a high-paced game with American firing off 14 shots compared to 17 for Penn State.
  • Penn State held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Cooper and David Coly led the team with three shots apiece.
UP NEXT
  • AU will remain on the road when they travel to face Longwood on Saturday, Sept. 11.
  • Kickoff in Farmville, Va., is scheduled for 7 pm.
