Men’s Soccer Ties at Longwood in Back-and-Forth Affair

FARMVILLE, Va. – Nevin Baer and Ethan Boyle scored their first career goals on Saturday night as the American University men's soccer team fought back from being down twice to a 3-3 tie against Longwood.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Baer scored in the 22nd minute to open up the scoring.
  • Boyle drew the Eagles even in the 58th minute.
  • David Coly, who led the Patriot League in goals last season, finally found the back of the net this season after burying a penalty kick to tie the game in the 83rd minute.
WHAT COACH SAMOL SAID

Overall thoughts on the game
  • "For us, the good news is that we didn't lose tonight. We were able to come back and at least get out of here with a tie. I think our first half really didn't represent us well. In the second half and overtimes we were better. I think we have to give some credit to Longwood for being pretty good at what they do, which is spacing out and taking risks and really making it hard to press. But a lot of it falls on our lack of desire to get out there and do the little things to make it harder for them to play the type of soccer they want to play."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American drew a corner kick in the 22nd minute that set up Baer's goal. The Eagles controlled possession in front of the net before Kevin Ventura made a nifty pass that found Baer, who drilled the ball to the far post to put AU up, 1-0.
  • Longwood wasted no time drawing even, finding the equalizer in the 33rd minute.
  • Ben Wilkinson played a dangerous bouncing cross in front of the net and Markus Gronli adjusted his body and fired a shot. Lorenzo Gordon got a hand on it, but the ball found the back of the net to make it 1-1.
  • Less than five minutes later, Josh Fordyce scored a goal after Mason Butcher's initial shot was blocked by the AU defense.
  • In the 42nd minute, American was called offsides on a play that would have resulted in a goal by Evan Schweickert.
  • American upped the pressure significantly to start the second half, finally finding the equalizer in the 59th minute.
  • Zemi Rodriguez threaded a great feed through the Longwood backline to Boyle, who beat the keeper with a shot to the right side.
  • Longwood took the lead in the 70th minute on Gronli's second goal of the game. After a tackle just outside the 18-yard box, Gronli curled a shot just past a diving Gordon.
  • After American earned a free kick from a dangerous spot on the field, Nicolas Blassou drew a foul in the box to give AU a penalty kick.
  • David Coly calmly drilled the PK down the middle to tie the game 3-3 in the 83rd minute.
  • Perhaps AU's best chance of the overtime period came right out of the gate. Damian Searchwell fired a low shot that went wide by just about six inches in the 91st minute.
  • Later on in the first overtime period, Coly appeared to make a great play and dribble around the keeper for a goal, but a foul was called before the shot attempt, nullifying the play.
  • With less than two minutes remaining, Longwood put a couple feet on the ball deep in American's end, but great team defense by the Eagles allowed them to clear the ball out of danger and keep the game tied at 3.
