Men’s Soccer Draws Delaware for Second Straight Tie

WASHINGTON – Despite intense second-half pressure, American University men's soccer couldn't find a game-winning goal against Delaware on Tuesday afternoon, tying the Blue Hens after two overtime periods.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • David Coly scored his second goal of the season in the 51st minute.
  • Ethan Boyle earned his first career assist on Coly's tally.
  • Lorenzo Gordon picked up five saves for the fourth time this season.
  • It's the second straight match that AU has tied.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half as the Blue Hens attempted nine shots compared to four for American.
  • Mattias Cooper had the only shot on goal of the half for AU in the 10th minute.
  • Coly scored for the second straight game after taking a long pass from Boyle in stride before dribbling past the last defender and scoring the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute.
  • It was a great transition play, as AU's defense flipped possession to get the ball to Boyle, who sent a great ball to Coly who was all alone as he made his way into the box.
  • Delaware found an equalizer just over six minutes later as Carlos Fernandez scored his first goal of the season to draw Delaware even.
  • His rocket shot was deflected by the AU defense up into the air and just past the outstretched reach of Gordon for a goal.
  • The Eagles placed three shots on target in the final 20 minutes of the second half as they upped their offensive pressure in search of the go-ahead goal.
  • In the first overtime period, Jack Green took a free kick from a dangerous spot just outside the 18-yard box, but his shot was saved.
  • Perhaps the best chance of overtime came as Dilane Zouantcha sent a pass to the far post that found Nevin Baer's head, but Delaware's keeper was able to shift over and get the save.
  • In the second overtime period, Delaware's Zach Golden fired a shot that rattled off the crossbar and bounced out as AU narrowly avoided surrendering the game-winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Delaware had a slight 16-14 advantage in shots taken, but AU placed eight on target compared to four for the Blue Hens.
  • American played in its second straight overtime game.
  • Both teams had three corner kicks.
