Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Drops Tough Loss Against Santa Clara

WASHINGTON – It was the first time American University men's soccer had ever faced Santa Clara and the Eagles just couldn't figure out the Broncos on Friday afternoon, surrendering the game-winning goal less than three minutes into the second half before ultimately falling, 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara had the best chances of the first half, spraying five shots and placing three on target.
  • American, despite possessing the ball on their half for a decent amount of time, couldn't record a quality chance as they were held without a shot in the first 45 minutes.
  • The Broncos wasted no time jumping ahead in the second half, as they connected a chain of passes that made it all the way up to Tyrone Kirunda, who raced along the end line before feeding Oladayo Thomas for a goal.
  • American played with a sense of urgency while trailing but quality chances didn't follow, as they only placed one shot on goal in the second half despite drawing three corner kicks.
  • A shot by Zemi Rodriguez in the final minute of play went wide and Santa Clara emerged victorious, 1-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lorenzo Gordon picked up three saves.
  • Mustapha Sowe registered his first career shot.
  • American's offensive pressure in the second half resulted in a 3-2 shots advantage and 3-0 corner kick advantage in the period.
UP NEXT
  • AU will hit the road for the first time when they face No. 17 ranked Penn State on Monday night.
  • Kickoff in University Park, Pa., is scheduled for 7 pm.
  • The Eagles will return to Reeves Field on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 3 pm against Delaware.
