Men’s Soccer Prevails over George Mason in Defensive Battle

FAIRFAX, Va. – American University men's soccer scored early and then played solid defense to pick up a 1-0 win over local rival George Mason on Tuesday night.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • For the fourth time in five games, David Coly found the back of the net.
  • Evan Schweickert picked up his second assist of the season.
  • The Eagles picked up back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since October 2016.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American drew a corner kick just over a minute into the match, showing their tenacity right out of the gate.
  • In the 6th minute, Schweickert dished a short pass to Coly, who danced around the keeper before firing a shot to the bottom left corner to put AU on top, 1-0.
  • AU outshot Mason 4-0 in the first half, controlling the pace throughout the first 45 minutes.
  • In the 48th minute, the Patriots generated their first real opportunity of the match, but Dominic Dominguez was there to pick up his first save of the night on a point-blank shot by Ishmail Kamara.
  • Dominguez picked up another save in the 63rd minute, stretching and diving to his right to push a ball to the post and keep Mason off the board.
  • AU was forced to play a man down for the final 13 minutes after Jerry Zouantcha received a red card. He made a hard slide tackle at the same time as a Mason player, resulting in a collision.
  • In the 84th minute, Zemi Rodriguez made a great run down the far side and fired off a shot that was saved by Mason. Coly had a follow-up shot blocked by the Mason defense.
  • Mason created tremendous pressure as time was winding down, but a shot right before time expired sailed high to cement the shutout.
