WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team (5-3, 1-0 PL) couldn't find the response to No. 9 Maryland's (7-2, 1-1 Big Ten) high-octane offense on Sunday, falling to the Terrapins, 4-0.
NOTABLES
- Sophomore goalkeeper Bryn Underwood topped her career-high from two weeks ago with 11 saves against Maryland. The returning Patriot League Rookie of the Year came into the weekend with a personal best of 10 saves from the conference opener against Lafayette last week.
- Maryland put up 27 shots, 15 on goal, to American's five, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 9-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maryland got on the board early with Hope Rose and Bibi Donraadt posting a pair of goals within the first 10 minutes of the game.
- The Eagles found their footing in the second quarter, challenging the Terrapins' defensive line with a pair of penalty corners in the opening minutes. Senior Noor Coenen put up two shots, but Maryland goalkeeper Noelle Frost picked up the save on the first and the second went just wide of the cage.
- Junior Megan Hoffman had another look late in the half, but her long shot from the top of the circle was saved by a diving Frost to send the teams into the break at 2-0.
- The Terrapins' Donraadt found the back of the cage once again midway through the third quarter off a pass from Julianna Tornetta to bring the score up to 3-0.
- Hoffman had another look a minute later, but the shot went just wide.
- Five minutes into the fourth quarter, junior Charllene Boshoff posted a well-placed shot off a penalty corner insertion from senior Gaby de Kock, but the shot was saved, putting Maryland in transition. Anna Castaldo got off a quick shot on the other end but Underwood came away with the save. Emma DeBerdine was there to collect the rebound though, and put away the fourth and final goal of the day.
NEXT UP
- American will be back at Jacobs for a double-header next weekend, hosting Bucknell at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Michigan State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
