#25 Field Hockey Still Perfect in PL with 3-2 Win Over Defending Champ Bucknell

WASHINGTON - The No. 25 American University field hockey team (6-3, 2-0 PL) remains perfect in Patriot League play after the Eagles tabbed a clutch win over defending league champion Bucknell on Saturday, 3-2.

NOTEWORTHY
  • American had another well-rounded scoring effort with three Eagles getting on the scoreboard. Seniors Gaby de Kock and Josie Formica, and sophomore Imogen Hatton each found of the back of the cage while senior Noor Coenen pitched in a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Bryn Underwood nabbed four saves on the day.
  • AU led with 12 shots to Bucknell's nine, although the Bison held the advantage in corner opportunities, 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a tight first quarter between the two conference rivals, with each team placing a pair of shots on goal but neither able to break the 0-0 stalemate.
  • American took control in the second quarter, dominating offensively with six shots while the Bison struggled to get a clean look at the net.
  • De Kock delivered AU its lead in the opening minutes of the second stanza, taking a pass in from Coenen after a penalty corner insertion and tapping it in just out of reach of the stretched out Bucknell goalkeeper. That is de Kock's first goal of the season and sixth of her career.
  • Formica added one of her own five minutes later, also after a penalty corner. Senior Georgia Davies placed the initial shot but it was blocked by the Bucknell keeper and the clearance attempt by the Bison's defend was intercepted by the onrushing Formica. She placed the shot just over the diving goalkeeper for her second goal of the year.
  • The Eagles continued to push for the rest of the half but couldn't widen the gap any more and entered the break with the 2-0 lead.
  • Hatton closed the scoring for AU midway through the third quarter, deflecting in the initial ball in from Coenen after a nice run in from the 25-yard line.
  • Bucknell began to battle back in the final seconds of the stanza as Mackenzie Kile tipped the ball just over Underwood's head after a long pass in from Mary Kate Stefanowicz to bring the score to 3-1 heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • The Bison continued fighting down the stretch putting up three shots while the Eagles' defensive line tried to keep up with the frantic pace. Bucknell finally connected on one with less than a minute on the clock as Emily Doyle found the back of the cage with an assist from Kile, but it was too little too late as the final seconds ticked down.
