Men's Soccer Fights for 2-0 Victory over Lehigh

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer emerged victorious after a very physical match against Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Robbie Matei scored his first career goal on a penalty kick in the 59th minute.
  • Just 21 seconds later, Jerry Zouantcha picked up his first goal of the season to give AU a two-goal cushion.
  • In his first collegiate action, Dominic Dominguez was outstanding in goal, picking up four saves, including a few diving stops to help cement the shutout.
  • It's the first clean sheet of the season for the Eagles. The last time AU shutout an opponent also came against Lehigh on March 6, 2021.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American had the first quality chance in the 5th minute as Nicolas Blassou hit the woodwork with a header before a follow-up attempt from Nevin Baer missed the net.
  • Lehigh was aggresive on their challenges all day long, picking up their first yellow card in the 11th minute.
  • In the 26th minute, Baer and Ethan Boyle had back-to-back shots saved by Noah Sutherland.
  • The Mountain Hawks put on heavy pressure in the last 15 minutes of the first half, culminating in a great shot from Euan Forrest in the 36th minute that Dominguez was able to knock away for his first save.
  • In the 59th minute, Zouantcha was tackled in the box to draw a penalty. At first, it looked like David Coly would take the shot, but he deferred to Matei, who buried his first career goal to put AU on top, 1-0.
  • Right off the restart, the Eagles took possession back and Coly fed Zouantcha inside the box. Zouantcha danced around a defender before firing a low line-drive shot to the far post that deflected off the post and in for a goal.
  • Dominguez picked up three second-half saves, all of which came after AU took the lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The two teams were exactly even on shots taken at 13.
  • Lehigh drew seven corner kicks compared to four for AU.
  • 34 fouls were called on Saturday afternoon.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles are right back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 28 against local rival George Mason.
