Freshman Forwards Lead Men’s Soccer Past Old Dominion On Phil Reeves Day

WASHINGTON – In their first career games for American University men's soccer, Zemi Rodriguez and Dilane Zouantcha made their presence felt immediately, as each of them scored a goal to push the Eagles past Old Dominion on Sunday evening.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Rodriguez found paydirt in the 16th minute with an assist from David Coly.
  • Coly picked up his first two assists in AU uniform on Sunday as he also set up Zouantcha's game-winner in the 72nd minute.
  • Dating back to last season, Coly has now scored a point in seven straight matches, tying Kris Bertsch and Angel Lanchas for the record for most consecutive games with a point since 1997.
  • The Eagles played in front of fans for the first time since Nov. 2, 2019. This year's Phil Reeves Game, presented by official game sponsors Jettie's and Surfside, attracted 1,103 fans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Right away, American's offense was threatening, as Jerry Zouantcha hit the post in the 10th minute.
  • In the 16th minute, a pressing Coly intercepted a mishandled pass by ODU around and raced all the way toward the net, dishing a pass to Rodriguez who then beat the keeper to put AU up, 1-0.
  • Lorenzo Gordon stood tall in net, withstanding a barrage of corner kicks and free kicks during a physical battle to come away with three first-half saves and five total.
  • After halftime, Old Dominion stepped up their game offensively, finally equalizing in the 52nd minute.
  • Liam Fisch passed out to Philip Perry, who perfectly placed a ball to the far post that Karan Mandair headed home for a goal.
  • With a raucous crowd ready to erupt, American finally jumped ahead in the 72nd minute.
  • Coly placed a short pass to the younger Zouantcha, who made one dribble before firing a shot into the top left corner to put AU on top, 2-1.
  • Old Dominion had a couple chances down the stretch, but a last-second shot was easily saved by Gordon to give AU the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Old Dominion had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 10-7 advantage in shots taken.
  • In a physical battle, Old Dominion picked up three yellow cards compared to one for AU.
  • Nevin Baer led the Eagles with two shots.
UP NEXT
  • AU will be back at Reeves Field on Friday, Sept. 3 against Santa Clara.
  • Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
