Volleyball Turns Things Around at Loyola Maryland with a 3-1 Win

BALTIMORE - After two tough matches in the past week, American University volleyball righted the ship with a 3-1 road win at Loyola Maryland on Friday night. The Greyhounds (1-4) had beaten the Eagles (3-3) by the same score just one week ago.

NOTABLE
  • There were strong performances across the board for the Eagles, who were led by Helena Elbaek's 22 kills.
  • Tyra Areskoug added a kills and two blocks to a double-double outing of 42 assists and 16 digs.
  • Katie Putney recorded a season-high 14 kills while hitting .324.
  • Carlie Fikse added a team-best four blocks to nine kills, and was error-free while hitting .474 for the night.
  • Chiara Bosetti tied for match-high honors with 18 digs, also serving up a match-best three aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening set was neck-and-neck all the way down the stretch, with nearly equal statistical performances statistically by both teams.
  • After AU let a 23-21 lead slip away, head coach Barry Goldberg called timeout at 23-23. Coming out of the timeout, Elbaek knocked down back-to-back kills for a 25-23 set win.
  • The Eagles were stronger in the second set and had a cushion of a few points for much of the way. But, once again, the Greyhounds battled and a 22-18 lead for AU became just a one-point lead at 24-23.
  • This time it was Putney with the clutch play and a kill to end the set in favor of the Eagles, 25-23.
  • The loss in the third set was a tough one to swallow for American, as the Eagles had five chances at set and match point.
  • Ultimately, Loyola broke a 27-27 tie to get its first set point, and then won 29-27 on the only service ace for either team in the set.
  • American looked like a new team in the fourth set, coming out firing on all cylinders. The Eagles hit .414 compared to .032 for the Greyhounds, committing only one error in 29 attempts.
  • Two early service aces for Bosetti helped set the tone as AU pulled away and never looked back, at one point leading 19-9 before winning the set 25-16.
POSTGAME THOUGHTS
  • "Big turn for us tonight. Close games and we kept fighting. Helena and Katie had good success. Asli Celikkol was steady and our middles all contributed nicely. A team win with lots of good progress." - Coach Goldberg
NEXT UP
  • The Eagles will play their final regular season match at Navy on Sunday, March 28 at 4 p.m. Four teams will advance to the Patriot League Championships at Colgate on April 2-3. The Eagles currently sit in fourth place.
